In December 2009, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has newly established this RS/GIS Web-Tutorial Website for those who are interested in the past trainings which JAXA has carried out for last 15 years for the Asia-Pacific nations.

GEOSS/AWCI Secretariat and Cooperation Organizations

What triggered the establishment of this RS/GIS Web-Tutorial Website is the "Asia Water Cycle Initiative (AWCI)" which JAXA has been promoting for last four years in cooperation with the following organizations:

  • (1) GEOSS/AWCI Secretariat (=Department of Civil Engineering, The University of Tokyo)
  • (2) United Nations University (UNU)
  • (3) Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN)
  • (4) Monsoon Asia Integrated Regional Study (MAIRS)
  • (5) International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) under the auspices of UNESCO operated by an independent administrative institution so-called the Public Works Research Institute (PWRI) of Japan.

Past AWCI Symposia and Meeting

For solving the common water-related problems in Asia, members of the GEOSS/AWCI Secretariat and both cooperation organizations and participating agencies of AWCI have sought a kind of capacity building activity which would be most cost-effective and time-efficient for those who needed trainings in field of water resources management, based on the discussions made during the following AWCI symposia and meeting which were held in the past:

  • (1) 1st Asian Water Cycle Symposium: Nov.2005 in Tokyo, Japan
  • (2) 2nd Asian Water Cycle Symposium: Jan.2007 in Tokyo, Japan
  • (3) 3rd Asian Water Cycle Symposium: Dec.2007 in Ohita Pref., Japan
  • (4) 4th AWCI-ICG(International Coordination Group) Meeting: Feb.2009 in Kyoto, Japan
  • (5) 5th AWCI-ICG(International Coordination Group) Meeting: Dec.2009 in Kyoto, Japan
  • (6) 6th AWCI-ICG(International Coordination Group) Meeting: Mar.2010 in Bali, Indonesia
  • (7) 7th AWCI-ICG(International Coordination Group) Meeting: Oct.2010 in Kyoto, Japan

The 5th Meeting of GEOSS/AWCI ICG

The 5th Meeting of GEOSS/AWCI ICG was held at the University of Tokyo (UT) between 15th and 17th December 2009, and a training workshop on AQUA/AMSR-E, ALOS and Applications of Drought Monitoring using RS Products are organized in the afternoon of 17th and the whole 18th.

JAXA-proclaimed Three Objectives

In addition, JAXA has also established this RS/GIS Web-Tutorial Website for realizing the following three objectives of its own:

  • (1) To promote the satellite-data utilization for solving the Asian water problems relating to hydrological cycles, disasters, etc.
  • (2) To provide the beginners of the satellite-data utilization with some of the supporting tools which are needed for their study.
  • (3) To give some chances of re-study to the JAXA's past-training participants.

Through this website which are made out of the past trainings provided by JAXA, you may find some valuable courses which are relating to your area of expertise. Let's try to use JAXA's RS/GIS Web-Tutorial Website!
